Dr. Shayota works with local dental labs to create mouthguards and nightguards for sports and TMJ disorders:

Sports Mouthguards

There are many advantages to wearing a sports mouthguard during contact sports. Sports mouthguards:

  • Minimize the risk of damaged teeth
  • Reduce the chance of losing permanent teeth
  • Protect trauma to the lower jaw
  • Reduce stress on the neck
  • Minimize the risk of bruising and injury to soft tissues

Sports mouthguards are customized to allow the wearer to speak clearly. Custom mouthguards also prevent distractions from sports games. Mouthguards that do not fit properly can slip, leading to people clenching their teeth to keep their mouthguards in place. Custom-made sports mouthguards are made of flexible, rubbery plastic that covers the front of the teeth.

Nightguards

Many patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can experience symptoms like teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism), morning headaches and migraines, or jaw pain. Wearing a nightguard during sleep can help alleviate these symptoms.

Nightguards are made of hard acrylic to prevent patients from unconsciously chewing on their mouthguards during sleep. These oral appliances cover the upper or lower teeth, protecting the teeth from further wear or dental injuries.

Wearing a nightguard can also prevent patients from waking up with headaches and migraines, as the oral appliance prevents bruxism. Continual bruxism and pressure on the teeth can lead to morning headaches and chronic migraines.
