Your First Dental Appointment

We want your first visit to our office to be a positive and comfortable experience. At this appointment, our team will take time to get to know you, review your health history, and learn about your personal dental goals. This visit is also a chance for you to meet Dr. Shayota and ask any questions about your oral health or future care.

To make the process smooth, please come prepared with a few important items. Having these ready will help us set up your records quickly and make sure we can provide the best care for you:

  • Patient Forms
  • Valid Payment Method
  • Insurance Cards
  • Photo ID

We’ll provide a cleaning and dental x-rays at routine appointments every six months. You may also ask us any questions about your treatment options. We’re also here to help you learn about your oral health and make recommendations as needed.

Dental Cleaning and Exam

We’ll perform a complete dental examination of the teeth and gums before the cleaning. During this examination, we look for any signs of gum disease, tooth decay, or other common dental problems. We’ll inform you if we see areas of concern or developing dental issues.

During a dental cleaning, our registered dental hygienists (RDH) remove plaque and tartar buildup using specialized dental tools. As a result, our hygienists can reach areas of the smile that are often difficult to clean at home.

We also use gritty toothpaste to clean the teeth and floss between each tooth. Finally, we rinse, polish the teeth, and use a fluoride mouthwash. Dr. Shayota will then thoroughly examine the teeth and gums, looking for any emerging dental problems.

Dental X-rays

While we won’t take dental X-rays at every appointment, we recommend X-rays once a year. Digital X-rays help us keep track of your oral health and any emerging dental problems. Modern digital x-rays are also valuable diagnostic tools because they can see what we can’t with a visual exam.

Using dental x-rays, we can prepare patients for orthodontic treatment, find where to place dental implants, and even find wear in the jaw due to TMD.

Do you want to know more about us? We’re here to assist you. Read answers to common questions that patients have about their dental care in our Boulder dentist office.

What are the most common dental problems?

Many people will experience dental problems at some point in their lives. Some issues may seem small at first, but if left untreated, they can grow into bigger concerns that affect your comfort, confidence, and overall health. Knowing the signs of common dental problems can help you get care early and prevent long-term damage.

Some of the most common dental problems that patients can experience include:

  • Tooth Sensitivity
  • Gum Bleeding and Recession
  • Toothaches
  • Cavities
  • Worn Tooth Enamel

While these problems are common, they affect the health and function of the smile. So don’t hesitate to contact our office if you notice changes in your smile. We’re here to help.

How long does a dental cleaning take?

A dental cleaning usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The exact time can depend on how much plaque or tartar needs to be removed. If it’s been a while since your last cleaning, it may take a little longer. During the visit, our hygienist will carefully clean, polish, and floss your teeth to make sure your smile feels fresh and healthy.

How can I improve my oral hygiene?

Before you brush your teeth, floss to remove food debris and plaque between the teeth. Brush your tongue to combat bad breath. Harmful bacteria can collect on the tongue. If you have a dental restoration like a dental crown, dental bridge, or dentures, you can use an interdental brush to get a better clean.

Why are regular dental appointments necessary?

We recommend biannual dental visits for our patients so we can keep track of their dental problems and provide thorough dental cleanings. Sometimes, you can’t reach bacterial buildup in certain parts of the smile, especially if you have crooked or overcrowded teeth.

Regular dental cleanings every six months provide a deep clean. Additionally, some oral health problems are hard to see without technology, like dental x-rays that show issues we can’t see with a visual examination.

What if I feel nervous about going to the dentist?

We recommend calling our office first if you have dental anxiety. Our team has multiple options to help you get the dental treatment you need. If you’re a new patient, we can recommend an office tour so you can familiarize yourself with our office staff, dentists, and operatories.

When you visit us for an appointment, you can bring a loved one to sit with you while you wait. You can also listen to music or bring a fidget toy or stress ball to help distract you during treatment. Mild sedation is also a great option if you’re anxious about dental cleanings or routine dental treatments.

We welcome you to discuss your options with us. Our office wants you to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible so we can help you stay healthy.
